{"id":11612,"date":"2021-06-03T08:07:00","date_gmt":"2021-06-03T15:07:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.springboard.com\/?p=11612"},"modified":"2023-07-13T02:16:10","modified_gmt":"2023-07-13T09:16:10","slug":"algorithmic-transparency","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.springboard.com\/blog\/data-science\/algorithmic-transparency\/","title":{"rendered":"The AI Community Is Demanding More Transparent Algorithms\u2014Here&#8217;s Why"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>If you wanted to sum up racial bias in AI algorithms in one iconic moment, just take a few seconds of footage from the Netflix documentary <em>Coded Bias. <\/em>Minutes into the film, MIT researcher Joy Buolamwini discovers that the facial recognition software she installed on her computer wouldn\u2019t recognize her dark-skinned face until she put on a white mask. Released in January 2020, the film introduced the ways algorithmic bias has infiltrated every aspect of our lives, from sorting resumes for job applications, allocating social services, deciding who sees advertisements for housing, and who is approved for a mortgage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More importantly, the film served as a rude awakening to the notion that machines aren\u2019t neutral, that AI bias is \u201ca form of computationally imposed ideology, rather than an unfortunate rounding error,\u201d writes Janus Rose, a senior editor at VICE. Worse still, many of these algorithms are \u201cblack boxes,\u201d machine learning models whose inner workings are largely unknown even to their creators because of their immense complexity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI am thrilled that these documentaries are out there and people are talking about it because algorithmic literacy is another huge part of it,\u201d said Alison Cossette, a data scientist at NPD group and a mentor at Springboard. \u201cWe need for the general public to understand what algorithms do and don&#8217;t do.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"ratio ratio-16x9 my-5\" itemprop=\"video\"><img src=\"https:\/\/img.youtube.com\/vi\/162VzSzzoPs\/sddefault.jpg\" class=\"img-fluid\" alt=\"YouTube video player for 162VzSzzoPs\" loading=\"lazy\" style=\"object-fit:cover;width:100%;height:100%\" data-yt-facade=\"1\" \/><div class=\"yt-facade\" style=\"position:absolute;z-index:2;background:rgba(0,0,0,0.2)\"><svg fill=\"#fff\" height=\"100%\" viewBox=\"0 0 24 24\" width=\"72\" style=\"position:absolute;top:50%;left:50%;transform:translate(-50%, -50%);\"><path d=\"M0 0h24v24H0V0z\" fill=\"none\"><\/path><path d=\"M21.58 7.19c-.23-.86-.91-1.54-1.77-1.77C18.25 5 12 5 12 5s-6.25 0-7.81.42c-.86.23-1.54.91-1.77 1.77C2 8.75 2 12 2 12s0 3.25.42 4.81c.23.86.91 1.54 1.77 1.77C5.75 19 12 19 12 19s6.25 0 7.81-.42c.86-.23 1.54-.91 1.77-1.77C22 15.25 22 12 22 12s0-3.25-.42-4.81zM10 15V9l5.2 3-5.2 3z\"><\/path><\/svg><\/div><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Coded Gaze: Unmasking Algorithmic Bias\" width=\"1170\" height=\"658\" data-yt-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/162VzSzzoPs?start=50&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are<strong> black-box algorithm<\/strong>s?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Allowing black-box algorithms to make major decisions on our behalf is a symptom of a larger problem: we mistakenly believe that big data yields reliable and objective truths if only we can extract them using machine learning tools\u2014what Microsoft researcher Kate Crawford calls<strong> \u201cdata fundamentalism.\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Researchers at the University of Georgia discovered that people are more likely to trust answers <a href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.com\/news\/study-people-trust-the-algorithm-more-than-each-other\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">generated by an algorithm<\/a> than one from their fellow humans. The study also found that as the problems became more difficult, participants were more likely to rely on the advice of an algorithm than a crowdsourced evaluation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These findings played out in the real world in May 2020, when numerous U.S. government officials <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/opinion\/articles\/2020-05-07\/coronavirus-don-t-let-a-secret-algorithm-decide-who-will-die\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">relied on a pandemic-prediction model<\/a> by the Federal Emergency Management Agency to decide when and how to lift stay-at-home orders and allow businesses to reopen, defying the counsel of the Centers for Disease Control and scores of health experts. In fact, that same model <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/coronavirus-live-updates\/2020\/04\/09\/831004621\/fema-predicted-pandemic-effects-last-summer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">predicted in July 2019<\/a> that a nationwide pandemic would overwhelm hospitals and result in an economic shutdown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks to well-documented instances where algorithms outperformed humans, people have a tendency to overestimate AI capabilities just because machines can<a href=\"https:\/\/www.techrepublic.com\/article\/ibm-watson-the-inside-story-of-how-the-jeopardy-winning-supercomputer-was-born-and-what-it-wants-to-do-next\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> beat us at Jeopardy!<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/spectrum.ieee.org\/the-institute\/ieee-history\/how-ibms-deep-blue-beat-world-champion-chess-player-garry-kasparov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">defeat world chess champions<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/812317\/microsoft-msft-claims-its-speech-transcription-ai-is-now-better-than-human-professionals\/#:~:text=Microsoft%20claims%20its%20speech%20transcription%20AI%20is%20now%20better%20than%20human%20professionals&amp;text=To%20test%20how%20their%20algorithm,a%20confirmed%20100%25%20accurate%20transcription.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">transcribe audio with fewer mistakes<\/a> than humans. The potential for algorithms to perpetuate cycles of oppression by excluding certain groups on the basis of race, gender, and other protected attributes is known as <strong>technological redlining<\/strong>, derived from real estate redlining, the practice of racial segregation in housing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In<em> Coded Bias,<\/em> a celebrated teacher was fired after receiving a low rating from an algorithmic assessment tool and a group of tenants in a predominantly black neighborhood in Brooklyn campaigned against their landlord after the installation of a facial recognition system in their building. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When it comes to the U.S. correctional system, algorithms turn sentencing decisions into a literal game of Russian roulette. Risk assessment models used in courtrooms across the country evaluate a defendant\u2019s risk of reoffending, spitting out scores that prosecutors use to determine a defendant\u2019s bond amount, the length of their sentence, the likelihood of parole, and their risk of recidivism upon release. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.springboard.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/algorithmic-transparency-1-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"algorithms transparent\" class=\"wp-image-11617\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2016, investigative news outlet ProPublica <a href=\"https:\/\/www.propublica.org\/article\/machine-bias-risk-assessments-in-criminal-sentencing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">obtained the risk scores<\/a> of over 7,000 people arrested in Broward County, Florida, in 2013 and 2014 and checked to see how many were charged with new crimes over the next two years, the same benchmark used by creators of the algorithm. Not only were the scores unreliable&#8211;only 20% of the people predicted to commit violent crimes actually did so&#8211;but journalists uncovered significant racial disparities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The formula was particularly likely to flag Black defendants as future criminals and incorrectly labeled them at almost twice the rate as white defendants. In fact, Black people were 77% more likely to be flagged as high risk of committing a future violent crime, and 45% more likely to commit a future crime of any kind. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can model <strong>interpretability<\/strong> provide the answer?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The root of the evil is how hard it can be to understand how these machine learning algorithms arrive at certain computations. \u201cBlack box\u201d machine learning models are created directly from the data by an algorithm, meaning that even the humans who design them <a href=\"https:\/\/hdsr.mitpress.mit.edu\/pub\/f9kuryi8\/release\/6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cannot precisely interpret<\/a> how the model makes predictions, other than observing the inputs and outputs. In other words, the actual decision process can be entirely opaque.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To better understand this, consider how a neural network functions. Algorithms are essentially a set of step-by-step instructions or operations that a computer carries out in order to make predictions. After the algorithm trains on a set of test data, it generates a new set of rules (a series of supplementary algorithms) based on the results of those tests. The process repeats again and again until the algorithm reaches its optimal state (i.e. the highest possible accuracy). However, it\u2019s impossible to fully understand the relative weights a neural network assigns to all the different variables.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, let\u2019s say you\u2019re training a neural network to recognize images of sheep, so you train the algorithm on an image dataset of sheep on green pastures. The model might incorrectly assume that the green image pixels are a defining characteristic of sheep, and go on to classify any other object in a grassy setting as such. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Model interpretability<\/strong> enables <a href=\"https:\/\/www.springboard.com\/blog\/data-science\/what-does-a-data-scientist-do\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"24427\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">data scientists<\/a> to test the causality of the features, adjust the dataset and debug the model accordingly. For example, you can alter the data by adding images with different backgrounds or simply cropping out the background. Deep learning models are prone to learning the most discriminative features, even if they\u2019re the wrong ones. In a production setting, a data scientist may be pressured to select the algorithm with the highest accuracy, even if the training data may have been problematic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.springboard.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/algorithmic-transparency-2-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"algorithms transparent\" class=\"wp-image-11620\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen the drive is for accuracy, it\u2019s not unthinkable that people are going to game the algorithm so that it looks good,\u201d said Cossette. \u201cIf you\u2019re in a Kaggle competition, you want the highest accuracy, and it doesn\u2019t matter in reality if there\u2019s some other sort of impact.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most machine learning models are not designed with interpretability constraints in mind. Instead, they are intended to be accurate predictors on a static dataset that may or may not accurately represent real-world conditions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMany people do not realize that the problem is often with the data, as opposed to what machine learning does with the data,\u201d Rich Caruana, a senior researcher at Microsoft, <a href=\"https:\/\/cacm.acm.org\/news\/214618-in-black-box-algorithms-we-trust-or-do-we\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said at a 2017 annual meeting<\/a> of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. \u201cIt depends on what you are doing with the model and whether the data is used in the right way or the wrong way.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Caruana had recently worked on a pneumonia risk model that determined a pneumonia patient\u2019s risk of dying from the disease, and therefore who should be admitted to the hospital. On the basis of the patient data, the model found that those with a history of asthma have a lower risk of dying from pneumonia, when in fact asthma is a <a href=\"https:\/\/thorax.bmj.com\/content\/70\/10\/984\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">well-known risk factor<\/a> of pneumonia. The model had made that prediction based on the fact that patients with asthma get access to healthcare faster, and therefore concluded that they have a decreased mortality risk.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The misconception that accuracy must be sacrificed for interpretability has allowed companies to market and sell proprietary black-box models for high-stakes decisions when simple interpretable models exist for the same tasks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cConsumers are vastly more aware of these issues especially as they entangle with data privacy concerns,\u201d said Ayodele Odubela, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.springboard.com\/blog\/data-science\/data-science-definition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">data science<\/a> career coach and responsible AI educator with Kforce at Microsoft. \u201cMy organization, Ethical AI Champions, is working on educational tools for engineers in high-risk development teams as well as taking over the marketing aspect of AI products  to speak more accurately about algorithm limitations and setting the right expectations for customers and consumers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The explainable AI solution<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Explainable AI, often abbreviated as \u2018XAI,\u2019 is a blanket term for the mainstreaming of interpretable algorithms whose computations can be understood by its creators and users, like showing your work in a math problem. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think there are two layers to explainable AI,\u201d said Cossette. \u201cThere\u2019s the interpretability of the algorithm itself&#8211;which is, why did this thing spit out this answer? Then there are the deep layers and the training data, and how those two things affect the outcome.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One way to advocate for transparency in machine learning is by only using algorithms that are interpretable. Functions like linear regression, logistic regression, decision trees, and other linear regression extensions can be understood by mathematical formulas and the weights (coefficients) of the variables. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, let\u2019s take a hypothetical situation where a business uses a linear regression equation to determine starting salary for its junior employees based on years of work experience and GPA. The equation would look like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Salary= W1*experience + W2*GPA<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We have an interpretable linear equation where the weighting can tell us which variable is the stronger determinant of salary&#8211;experience or GPA. Decision trees are also interpretable because we can see how decisions are being taken starting from the root node to the leaf node. However, models become harder to interpret when training a deep decision tree for a depth of eight or nine, where there are too many decision rules to present effectively in a flow diagram. In this case, you can use feature importance to interpret the importance of each feature at a global level. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.springboard.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Algorithmic-transparency-3.jpg\" alt=\"algorithms transparent\" class=\"wp-image-11623\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>While convolutional neural networks (CNN)&#8211;used for things like object classification and detection&#8211;were once unassailable enigmas due to having hundreds of convolutional layers, where each layer learns filters of increasing complexity, researchers are discovering ways to <a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/pdf\/1710.00935.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">make them interpretable<\/a>. One way to do this when building a <a href=\"https:\/\/learn.springboard.com\/school-of-data\/white-paper\/revolutionizing-photography-with-an-ai-based-image-classifier\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/learn.springboard.com\/school-of-data\/white-paper\/revolutionizing-photography-with-an-ai-based-image-classifier\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CNN for image recognition<\/a> is to train the filters to recognize object parts rather than simple textures&#8211;thereby giving the model a clearly defined set of object features to recognize. In the example given by the researchers, a cat would be recognized by its feline facial features rather than its paws, ears or snout, which are present in other animals. This would more closely mimic how humans recognize and classify objects&#8211;the ultimate goal of computer vision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"399\" height=\"218\" src=\"https:\/\/www.springboard.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/algorithms-sample.png\" alt=\"algorithms sample\" class=\"wp-image-47032\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.springboard.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/algorithms-sample.png 399w, https:\/\/www.springboard.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/algorithms-sample-380x208.png 380w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 399px) 100vw, 399px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Image courtesy of Quanshi Zhang, Ying Nian Wu, and Song-Chun Zhu<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p> \u201cAlgorithms find things in images that the human eye doesn&#8217;t find because it can measure the pixel value to extremely high precision, and so it sees some slight pattern in all the pixels,\u201d said Lane. \u201cYou have to be really careful about randomizing not only how you generate data, but how you create and label the data&#8211;especially with a neural network.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Interpretable models are important because people need to be able to trust algorithms that make decisions on their behalf. From an ethical standpoint, fairness is a big part of the equation. AI is only as good as the data it\u2019s trained on, and datasets are often fraught with biases for two reasons: the data points reflect real-world conditions of racial and gender discrimination, or, the people who create the algorithms don\u2019t represent the diverse interests and viewpoints of the general population. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2018, Amazon scrapped its in-house applicant tracking system because it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-amazon-com-jobs-automation-insight\/amazon-scraps-secret-ai-recruiting-tool-that-showed-bias-against-women-idUSKCN1MK08G\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">didn\u2019t like resumes<\/a> containing the word \u201cwomen,\u201d so if an applicant listed \u201cmentoring women entrepreneurs\u201d as one of their achievements, they were out of luck.
