Research shows that learning with a mentor not only helps you build skills faster, but also enables career growth. And our own students\u2019 experiences reflect that. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our mentors receive a monthly per-student honorarium, but some donate their pay to charities through Springboard. Last month, we made our most recent donation on their behalf, giving $11,513 to a diverse group of nonprofit organizations doing important work around the world. Among the charities our mentors supported:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.malala.org\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Malala Fund<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, founded by Malala Yousafzai and her father, Ziauddin, in 2013 to champion education for girls around the world, with a focus on Afghanistan, Brazil, India, Lebanon, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Turkey.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/helenkellerfoundation.org\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Helen Keller Foundation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, formed in 1988 by Helen Keller\u2019s family and a group of scientists striving to \u201cprevent blindness and deafness by advancing research and education.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/code.org\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CODE.org<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, launched in 2013 by twin brothers Hadi and Ali Partovi to expand access to computer science in schools and increase participation by women and underrepresented minorities (who now make up a majority of the program\u2019s students).<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/mahindrafoundationusa.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Mahindra Foundation, USA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, established in 2007 to provide a platform for Americans and Indians residing in the U.S. to support the education of girls in India.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;These donations are an opportunity for the Springboard mentor community to&nbsp;raise funds for organizations they are passionate about,&#8221; said&nbsp;Chirag Mahapatra, a mentor for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.springboard.com\/courses\/ai-machine-learning-career-track\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.springboard.com\/courses\/ai-machine-learning-career-track\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Machine Learning Engineering Career Track<\/a> students. &#8220;I chose my organization because I had volunteered with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.handsonbayarea.org\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hands on Bay Area<\/a> in the past and have been very impressed by them.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;For me, mentoring is about giving back to the data science community,&#8221; said Dingchao Zhang, who mentors <a href=\"https:\/\/www.springboard.com\/courses\/data-science-career-track\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.springboard.com\/courses\/data-science-career-track\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Introduction to Data Science<\/a>&nbsp;students. &#8220;Donating my mentor honorarium is a way to continue in that spirit.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our mentors, most of whom are working full-time or equivalent jobs, dedicate different amounts of time to Springboard. Some work with one student at a time, while others take on nearly full-time roles guiding as many as a dozen of our online learners. All are remarkable people (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.springboard.com\/join-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">only 1 in 12 who apply are accepted<\/a>) who are passionate about their fields and about giving back.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meet some of our awesome mentors:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meg and Alex Clayton are a married design duo who not only work together in user experience at Whirlpool Corporation, but who also mentor Springboarders who are learning UX skills. \u201cTeaching and mentoring students is something I\u2019ve been passionate about for a while,\u201d Meg said. \u201cI love Springboard because it allows me to keep my day job, while in the evenings, I get to support and advise others just starting in the field.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.springboard.com\/blog\/data-science\/springboard-mentor-david-yakobovitch\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.springboard.com\/blog\/data-science\/springboard-mentor-david-yakobovitch\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">David Yakobovitch<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an enterprise data scientist and an AI instructor who has spent the past few years working with the Software Carpentry Foundation, teaching nonprofit data science and computer science workshops to postdoc students. Through this program, he\u2019s taught at Rutgers, NASA, and Harvard Medical School. He\u2019s a popular Springboard mentor because of real-world advice like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.springboard.com\/blog\/data-science\/data-science-portfolio\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.springboard.com\/blog\/data-science\/data-science-portfolio\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">these tips<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> he recently shared about creating a data science portfolio.<br><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.springboard.com\/blog\/business-and-marketing\/springboard-mentor-suzy-deline\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.springboard.com\/blog\/business-and-marketing\/springboard-mentor-suzy-deline\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Suzy DeLine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> earned a drama degree from Northwestern University, but realized that directing and producing\u2014calling the shots\u2014was more fun than performing. So she set her sights on business school and is now a content strategist and marketing manager with more than 15 years of digital marketing experience. The personal connection mentorship provides \u201cis profoundly motivating,\u201d Suzy said. \u201cTo know someone is expecting your best makes you bring it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Srdjan Santic has been a Springboard mentor since the end of 2015.
