{"id":7036,"date":"2019-04-24T12:41:19","date_gmt":"2019-04-24T19:41:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.springboard.com\/?p=7036"},"modified":"2023-07-05T22:00:27","modified_gmt":"2023-07-06T05:00:27","slug":"marketing-success-barbara-kalicki","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.springboard.com\/blog\/business-and-marketing\/marketing-success-barbara-kalicki\/","title":{"rendered":"Becoming \u2018the Glue\u2019 of the Marketing Team"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Barbara Kalicki spent 12 years working in the financial services industry before she found herself, accidentally, falling into her first marketing role. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI was tasked with taking over social media and SEO because the manager I was working for at the time had no experience in those areas,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019m pretty technically inclined, so my manager said, \u2018I don\u2019t want to deal with social media or SEO, can you handle it?\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Excited by the opportunity to develop a new skill set, Barbara jumped headfirst into learning about social media, email marketing, and SEO by devouring content online and taking whatever courses she could find. But just as her excitement was growing, her position at the company was cut and she found herself back on the job market. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen I had to find another job, I thought: now I <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">really<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> need to learn digital marketing, if this is what I want to do with my career,&#8221; Barbara said with a chuckle.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After discovering Springboard and reading a couple of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.switchup.org\/bootcamps\/springboard\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reviews of the digital marketing bootcamp<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, she decided to reach out to the team to learn more. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI told them I&#8217;d just been let go from my job,\u201d said Barbara, who expressed concern about her ability to pay for the course given that she was newly unemployed. \u201cSpringboard gave me a scholarship and told me about their payment plans. I looked at other courses, too, from Cornell and a couple of other places\u2014they were way more expensive and didn&#8217;t have the one-on-one mentorship with an expert in the field, which was really important to me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The structure of the curriculum itself also appealed to Barbara. \u201cThe assignments make you really dive into the actual content as opposed to just reading some things, studying, then taking a test,\u201d she said. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Learning from an experienced entrepreneur<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Barbara dove into the online curriculum, she was paired with mentor <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/davebascom\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dave Bascom<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an experienced entrepreneur who had previously founded and sold <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SEO.com<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDave was really, really great,\u201d she said. \u201cHe said, \u2018Barb, you\u2019ve got this. You know what this stuff is, you just need to put it in a context that other people understand.\u2019 Many times instead of talking about the course we would chat about real-life problems that I came across\u2014what I\u2019d do for this event or how I\u2019d improve the SEO of a particular webpage\u2014that kind of thing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The opportunity to work with a true subject-matter expert had benefits far greater than just helping with understanding new course material and concepts. \u201cMeeting weekly with Dave showed me how to think from the perspective of somebody that has tons of experience in the area\u2014he was definitely a great resource for me,\u201d said Barbara. \u201cEven after the program ended, Dave said, \u2018If you ever have any questions, or need any assistance, just let me know and you can reach out. After working in a series of more task-oriented positions, Barbara knew what she was looking for.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI really wanted to get into a more strategic role,\u201d she said. \u201cThat was one of the reasons I took the course to begin with\u2014I knew if I could start talking and learning analytics, then I could analyze things and come up with strategies to help businesses grow.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Soon after completing the program, Barbara landed a job at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tcsedsystem.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TCS Education System<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a company she had first applied to two years prior. The company provides resources and operational expertise necessary for several affiliate colleges, allowing their partner schools to focus on creating new programs and providing a great student experience. Barbara is now part of a 25-person marketing team, acting as the company\u2019s digital measurement and insights strategist.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMy job is basically to take data, analyze it, and come up with recommendations,\u201d she said.&nbsp;\u201cI&#8217;m providing recommendations to deans, professors, and presidents of colleges based on insights from Google Analytics, AdWords, Salesforce, and other tools. My job is to create and tell a story that they understand. I show them how our marketing programs influence things and why things like social media do matter.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>Related:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.springboard.com\/blog\/business-and-marketing\/what-does-a-digital-marketer-do\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"17740\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">What Does a Digital Marketer Really Do?<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being \u2018the glue\u2019 of the marketing team<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aside from delivering insights based on TCS Education System\u2019s marketing strategies, Barbara has also been asked to act as an agent of change within the organization. The company was operating with distinct design, content, and digital teams, but the groups were operating in silos. \u201cMy VP has said, \u2018If we want to be an award-winning marketing team we have to stop operating in silos and start talking to each other,\u2019\u201d Barbara recalled. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Barbara\u2019s new role put her in a position uniquely suited to open up communication between the groups, as the data she\u2019s analyzing is typically the output of the work of the entire marketing team. \u201cBarb, I want you to be the glue between all of the different teams, because it\u2019s kind of your role anyways,\u201d Barbara\u2019s VP said to her. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Barbara, playing the role of unifier struck at the heart of what she\u2019s grown to love about digital marketing. \u201cMy whole thing with digital marketing is it shouldn\u2019t be siloed, like, \u2018Oh you\u2019re going to do SEO, and then social media, and then this other channel or tactic,\u2019\u201d she said. \u201cDigital marketing really works best when all of the channels are working together, so if there\u2019s a problem, for example, a program with falling registrations, we can bring everybody together to figure out why it\u2019s happening and what we can do across the team to fix it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Advice for aspiring digital marketers<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now at home in a career that she loves, Barbara reflected on her own journey and experience in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.springboard.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.springboard.com\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Springboard\u2019s Digital Marketing Career Track<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019d tell anyone thinking about the program to take advantage of the Google AdWords Ad Grants program, which pairs students with a non-profit organization and a $10,000 marketing budget,\u201d Kalicki said. \u201cIt\u2019s one thing to learn in a school setting where you\u2019re taking tests and doing projects, but it\u2019s another thing to actually get your hands dirty and dig in. Doing the work to try to improve a business in the real world is very different from learning theory.
