And what other&nbsp;machine learning terminology is important to understand?<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">McKinsey&nbsp;has defined machine learning as \u201calgorithms that can learn from data without relying on rules-based programming.\u201d Carnegie Mellon University offers this: \u201cThe field of Machine Learning seeks to answer the question \u2018How can we build computer systems that automatically improve with experience, and what are the fundamental laws that govern all learning processes?\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Machine learning means that the accuracy of the system is improving over time, with the addition of more data and feedback. You probably encounter many examples of machine learning every day without realizing it. When Facebook suggests \u201cpeople you might know\u201d or when Amazon emails you recommendations of products you might like based on previous purchases, they are using machine learning algorithms to customize your results.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Machine learning deepens the work of artificial intelligence. In AI, researchers originally created rules for computers to make decisions. With machine learning, computers actually \u201clearn\u201d for themselves and design new rules through practice and repetition.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1016\" height=\"530\" src=\"https:\/\/www.springboard.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/image2-6.png\" alt=\"learning algorithms\" class=\"wp-image-7103\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.springboard.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/image2-6.png 1016w, https:\/\/www.springboard.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/image2-6-400x209.png 400w, https:\/\/www.springboard.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/image2-6-768x401.png 768w, https:\/\/www.springboard.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/image2-6-380x198.png 380w, https:\/\/www.springboard.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/image2-6-700x365.png 700w, https:\/\/www.springboard.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/image2-6-380x198.png 420w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1016px) 100vw, 1016px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.astro.caltech.edu\/~george\/ay122\/cacm12.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Source<\/a>.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From medical diagnoses to fraud detection, machine learning is improving our capability to solve societal problems. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/rctom.hbs.org\/submission\/paypals-use-of-machine-learning-to-enhance-fraud-detection-and-more\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paypal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> acquired the ML startup Simility to analyze millions of transactions and flag anomalies to prevent money laundering. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41551-018-0304-0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Machine learning<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can also predict hypoxaemia (low oxygen levels) during surgery; recognize cardiovascular risk factors like high blood pressure, age, and smoking in retinal images; and identify abnormal growths during colonoscopies.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adopting machine learning at scale is not without challenges. Machine learning can lead to overfitting (when the machine predicts outcomes based on historical data, but does not adapt to new variables) and sometimes it is difficult to find large enough data samples for the machines to train with. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although many people worry about ML replacing humans, people and machines complement each other in many ways. According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2018\/07\/collaborative-intelligence-humans-and-ai-are-joining-forces\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Harvard Business Review<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cthrough\u2026 collaborative intelligence, humans and AI actively enhance each other\u2019s complementary strengths: the leadership, teamwork, creativity, and social skills of the former, and the speed, scalability, and quantitative capabilities of the latter.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Humans can help train and operate machines and explain their behavior. It can also analyze housing quality and geographic locations to create real estate valuations and plan the layout of new city developments. It can classify information by topics within libraries or web pages and compile an easily accessible directory for users. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most common kind of clustering is <\/span><b>K-means clustering<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which involves representing each cluster by a variable \u201ck\u201d and then defining the centroid of those clusters. All data points are then assigned to a particular cluster and, through this process, we identify the centroid of the new clusters. Here are a few <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edureka.co\/blog\/k-means-clustering\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">examples<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of what K-means clustering looks like in practice:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A hospital wants to locate emergency units at the minimum possible distance from areas where accidents frequently happen<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A seismologist studies regions where earthquakes have occurred over the last few decades to identify the areas of greatest risk<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A pizzeria wants to understand where to locate stores based on customer demand to minimize the distance the drivers need to travel for delivery<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other clustering methods that you can learn more about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.geeksforgeeks.org\/clustering-in-machine-learning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include density-based clustering, hierarchical-based methods, partitioning methods, and grid-based methods. &nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Regressions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regressions create relationships and correlations between different types of data. For example, each <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/skymind.ai\/wiki\/neural-network\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">profile picture<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has an image with pixels that belong to a person. With <\/span><b>static prediction<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (one that stays the same over time), machine learning acknowledges that a certain pixel arrangement corresponds to a given name and allows for <\/span><b>facial recognition<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (for example, when Facebook recommends tags for the photos you\u2019ve just uploaded).<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regressions can also be useful when predicting outcomes based on data in the present. For a long time, statistical regression has been used to solve problems, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0053488\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">predicting the recovery<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of cognitive functions after a stroke or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/chapter\/10.1007\/978-3-642-35603-2_47\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">predicting customer churn<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the telecommunications industry. The only difference is that now many of these regression analyses can be done more efficiently and quickly by machines. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regression is a type of structured machine learning algorithm where we can label the inputs and outputs. <\/span><b>Linear regression<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> provides outputs with continuous variables (any value within a range), such as pricing data. <\/span><b>Logistical regression<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is when variables are categorically dependent and the labeled variables are precisely defined. Deep learning networks interpret <\/span><b>big data <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(data that is too large to fit on a single computer)\u2014both unstructured and structured\u2014and recognize patterns. The more data they can \u201clearn\u201d from, the more informed and accurate their decisions will be. Here are some examples of deep learning in practice:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chatbots and virtual assistants: Virtual assistants like Alexa and Siri or customer service <a href=\"https:\/\/www.springboard.com\/blog\/data-science\/benefits-of-chatbots-for-your-business\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.springboard.com\/blog\/data-science\/benefits-of-chatbots-for-your-business\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">chatbots<\/a> on different web pages can receive human requests, decipher language, and present lifelike responses.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Real-time bidding and programmatic advertising: Advertising now depends on software buying advertising space through a competitive bidding process. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cognitiv.ai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cognitiv AI<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an example of a deep learning platform that synthesizes data on customer demographics, weather, available inventory, time of day, and other variables to create custom buying algorithms for a specific target market.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recommendation engines: From travel sites like Booking.com and Expedia to streaming platforms like Netflix and Spotify, recommendation engines learn from past purchasing or usage behavior to customize marketing. There are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/codeburst.io\/explanation-of-recommender-systems-in-information-retrieval-13077e1d916c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">two forms of recommendation engines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: collaborative, where user preference data is collected at scale and users are compared to similar user personas, and content-based filtering, where properties of specific items are analyzed and future items are compared to past items to determine the closest matches.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Neural Networks<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Neural networks are closely related to deep learning. In an example where we want to estimate airline ticket prices, our input layer would collect the origin airport, destination airport, departure date, and airline.
