{"id":9723,"date":"2020-10-06T07:34:28","date_gmt":"2020-10-06T14:34:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.springboard.com\/?p=9723"},"modified":"2023-07-08T00:16:54","modified_gmt":"2023-07-08T07:16:54","slug":"rise-2020-career-pandemic-linkedin-dan-shapero","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.springboard.com\/blog\/news\/rise-2020-career-pandemic-linkedin-dan-shapero\/","title":{"rendered":"Rise 2024: Transforming Your Career In a Post-Pandemic World"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In his opening keynote address at this week\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/learn.springboard.com\/rise-2020\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rise 2020<\/span><\/a>\u2014<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Springboard\u2019s annual tech conference convening thought leaders in data, design, and software engineering\u2014Springboard co-founder and CEO Gautam Tambay reiterated Springboard\u2019s 10-year goal: to transform one million lives through education by 2030. \u201cAt Springboard, we dream of a more equitable world where everyone has opportunity,\u201d Tambay said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The five-day conference is taking place virtually for the first time this year, featuring an audience of Springboard students, mentors, alumni, partners, and employees across 48 U.S. states and 28 countries. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHaving a virtual conference actually levels the playing field,\u201d said Tambay. \u201cSo many more of you are able to attend this year regardless of your ability to travel or your family situation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the first panel discussion, Tambay interviewed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/dshapero\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Shapero<\/a>, SVP and chief business officer at LinkedIn, about his own career transition. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Giving up on leadership to achieve your dream <\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shapero was leading a thriving career in sales, overseeing a team of 1,200 sales representatives at LinkedIn. Annual revenue totaled around $50 million when he stepped in as the leader of LinkedIn\u2019s recruiting business; by 2014, it had ballooned to $1.5 billion. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shapero became an entrepreneur at age 19, building a web platform designed to help high school athletes get recruited by college soccer coaches (Shapero played the sport himself throughout high school and college). After selling the business at age 21, he decided he wanted to lead a tech company. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When he confided his dream to LinkedIn\u2019s then-CEO, Jeff Weiner, his superior informed him that he was in the wrong line of work. \u201cGreat tech companies are built on either great technology or a great product,\u201d Weiner told him. \u201cIf you want to lead a tech company someday, you need to understand how great products are built.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These words from a respected boss and mentor felt like a slap in the face, and it wasn\u2019t until a month or two later that Shapero realized Weiner was right, that he was missing a core skill he would need to take on his dream job. \u201cIt\u2019s that moment where you hear feedback that you don\u2019t want to hear, the uncomfortable truth,\u201d Shapero recalled, speaking from his home in the Bay Area. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once he realized he needed to make a career change, Shapero devised an exit plan that would allow him to transition from leading a 1,200-person organization on the sales team to becoming an individual contributor in product development\u2014a significant demotion in pay and rank. \u201cEveryone thought I was crazy,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<h3><b>The importance of being kind to yourself<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To maximize his chances of succeeding in his career transition, Shapero realized he had to be generous with himself. He decided to give himself two years to work in a non-leadership role on the product team, learn everything he possibly could about the products and content behind LinkedIn\u2019s talent solutions and learning businesses, then try to make the jump into his dream role in senior management. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the first nine months in his new job, he expressly refrained from criticizing his own work, knowing he had a major learning curve to overcome. Shapero had an MBA from Harvard Business School and had managed strategy consulting projects at Bain &amp; Company, a respected global consulting firm, but he\u2019d never worked on a product team before. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After coming out on the other side as VP of Product at LinkedIn, overseeing a $3 billion talent solutions business before being promoted to his current role as SVP, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/20121112140421-314058-the-crucible\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Shapero compares the gargantuan undertaking of switching careers to \u201cbeing in a crucible<\/a>.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A crucible is a vessel used for very hot chemical processes, like fusing metal to make steel, otherwise known as a biblical metaphor for a daunting trial or test. Deciding to leave a stable job and learn something completely new is tantamount to the extreme heat and pressure inside a crucible\u2014\u201cthose moments where you feel you\u2019re under tremendous pressure from the world around you,\u201d Shapero explained. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many Springboard students know the purgatory of studying nights and weekends while working full-time, defending their choices against the inquisitions of concerned family members and friends, and facing a relatively unknown future. Shapero advised learners not to shy away from the crucible, and instead embrace the transformative process. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m so inspired by the stories you share with me about [students] at Springboard and how they\u2019re doing the same thing,\u201d Shapero told Tambay. \u201cThey\u2019re imagining who they aspire to be in their careers and they\u2019re making it happen even though the step in the interim might be challenging or uncomfortable or uncertain.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9727\" src=\"https:\/\/www.springboard.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Screen-Shot-2020-10-05-at-5.18.34-PM.png\" alt=\"springboard rise 2020\" width=\"1366\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.springboard.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Screen-Shot-2020-10-05-at-5.18.34-PM.png 1366w, https:\/\/www.springboard.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Screen-Shot-2020-10-05-at-5.18.34-PM-400x225.png 400w, https:\/\/www.springboard.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Screen-Shot-2020-10-05-at-5.18.34-PM-1200x675.png 1200w, https:\/\/www.springboard.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Screen-Shot-2020-10-05-at-5.18.34-PM-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/www.springboard.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Screen-Shot-2020-10-05-at-5.18.34-PM-380x214.png 380w, https:\/\/www.springboard.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Screen-Shot-2020-10-05-at-5.18.34-PM-700x394.png 700w, https:\/\/www.springboard.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Screen-Shot-2020-10-05-at-5.18.34-PM-380x214.png 420w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1366px) 100vw, 1366px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">COVID-19 and the ensuing economic devastation has forced many people to consider switching careers, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.springboard.com\/blog\/career-advice\/online-learning-is-disrupting-higher-education\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">further their education<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or start a side hustle. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From March through mid-May, the U.S. economy <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cidrap.umn.edu\/news-perspective\/2020\/05\/us-job-losses-due-covid-19-highest-great-depression#:~:text=jpg,-Natalie_magic%20%2F%20iStock&amp;text=The%20US%20jobs%20report%20for,Great%20Depression%20in%20the%201930s.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lost 20.6 million jobs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. As of August, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/restaurants-and-retailers-have-regained-the-most-jobs-since-the-coronavirus-crisis-but-theres-a-catch-2020-08-07\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">only 42% of those jobs have returned<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. According to Shapero, trends in LinkedIn\u2019s hiring data show that specialized technical roles in data science, software engineering, and design proved the most resilient against a wave of layoffs at major companies including Uber, Disney, and Goldman Sachs. LinkedIn eliminated <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/2020\/07\/22\/linkedin-microsoft-msft-job-cuts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nearly 1,000<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> jobs in July as companies using the talent solutions platform cut back on hiring. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If anything positive is to be gleaned from the pandemic, it is that companies have been forced to rapidly evolve their digital strategy to cope with government-mandated lockdowns and social distancing guidelines, which has increased the demand for high-skilled tech workers. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Retail businesses are investing heavily in e-commerce to compete with Amazon\u2019s two-day shipping, fitness outfits are offering live-streamed classes, while entertainment companies are pivoting away from movie theaters and theme parks toward gaming and streaming services, Shapero noted. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn the job market, we see that technical roles in software engineering, data science, design project management roles are still in high demand,\u201d he said. \u201cJobs that require a physical presence are still lagging.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shapero advises current Springboard students to network with other alumnae on LinkedIn and to look for jobs that \u201chave a strong digital strategy\u201d\u2014which isn\u2019t strictly limited to the tech industry. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>The future of work will not be fully remote<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thought leaders like to say COVID-19 has accelerated the future of work, as tech companies like Twitter, Google, and Facebook plan for more permanent remote work. Some prognosticators foresee a mostly remote workforce spread across multiple geographies; others say a hybrid work-from-home model is more likely. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shapero says companies probably won\u2019t implement a blanket work-from-home policy but one that is specific to the role. \u201cI think the more technically specialized you are, the more remote work will be embraced.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Service-oriented roles will continue to require a physical presence, while those in team-oriented positions might be asked to report to the office two or three times a week for brainstorming sessions and team-building exercises that inspire creative thinking. Shapero predicts a high demand for \u201creally exceptional communications people\u201d who can help businesses with a distributed workforce across time zones and geographies navigate internal communications.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Asked if he had any advice for students looking to excel in their careers, Shapero said: \u201cWork on your skills and build relationships.
