In 2017, Toronto added 22,500 new technology jobs, more than San Francisco, New York City, and Seattle combined. Schools like the University of Toronto, York University, and Ryerson University do not just educate future tech employees, but also help create tech jobs. The University of Toronto alone houses 10 startup accelerators, including the Creative Destruction Lab. The citys more than 60 business incubators include the DMZ (housed at Ryerson) and MaRS Discovery District.
Not surprisingly, the data science community has strong ties to local universities. Data Science Toronto began as an initiative by students at the University of Toronto, in collaboration with IBMs Big Data University. There are smaller meetups and networking events, as well as large annual events, including Big Data Toronto: two days full of education, networking, and product demos.
