Los Angeles has the third largest startup scene behind the San Francisco Bay Area and New York City, and it continues to grow; this growth has likely been bolstered by the number of graduates from nearby computer engineering programs at schools like the University of California at Los Angeles, the University of Southern California, California Institute of Technology, and more. (In fact, US News and World Report included UCLA and USC in its roundup of top 20 AI programs). Thanks to the influx of this talent pool, a strong entrepreneurial mindset, and readily available funding, the startups throughout Southern California have been growing thier machine learning teams in recent years.
Los Angeles is home to Headspace, The Honest Company, and Virgin Hyperloop One. Other major technology companies that have a high-profile presence in the area include Google (and its YouTube Space), Facebook, Netflix, and Buzzfeed.
Big Data Day LA is a massive tech conference that began in 2013 with about 250 attendees and grew to more than 1,500 in just four years. In 2018, the event rebranded itself as Data Con LA and is now the largest data conference in Southern California, covering key topics in technology. The Data Science Federation is another interesting Los Angeles-based foundation. A partnership between the city and local schools, it uses machine learning and other techniques to help officials address social, economic, and policy issues more effectively.
