Medical assistant programs have widely different prices. Published examples reviewed for this guide include an approximately $4,000 total estimate at Pasadena City College and $23,200 in certificate-program tuition at Berkeley College, with additional fees. Springboard lists a $4,900 course price and a limited-time $2,638 pay-in-full offer. These are individual examples, not a national average or an all-inclusive price range.
To compare programs fairly, calculate what you would pay to finish each one: tuition, required fees, supplies, clinical expenses, certification, and costs created by the schedule. Then subtract grants or scholarships that have actually been awarded.
| Program example | Published amount | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| Springboard | $4,900 listed course price; $2,638 promotional pay-in-full offer | The lower price is a limited-time offer. The course page says one CCMA exam voucher is included. Confirm any separate clinical expenses. |
| Pasadena City College | Approximately $4,000 estimated program cost | The school’s estimate includes tuition, books, uniforms, and other listed items. Tuition is calculated at $46 per unit for 40 units; confirm the rate applicable to you. |
| Berkeley College | $23,200 program tuition for 2026–2027 | Includes books, an applicable background check, and the first certification/licensure exam. Semester fees and some additional expenses are separate. |
How much does a medical assistant program cost?
The table below separates what each published figure represents. Prices were checked on September 11, 2026; confirm the current enrollment terms before making a decision.
The differences are substantial, but the figures cover different baskets of costs. Pasadena provides an approximate program budget. Berkeley publishes a tuition bundle plus separate fees. Springboard’s promotional offer can change. Comparing only the first number would hide these distinctions.
Delivery format also tells you little about the final bill. An online course may reduce commuting, while a nearby public college may have a favorable tuition rate. The clinical schedule, included materials, and aid available to you can change the comparison.
Tuition is one part of your budget
Ask each school for a written list of required charges. A useful budget separates school charges from expenses you pay elsewhere.
| Budget category | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Tuition and school fees | Full-program versus per-credit pricing; registration, technology, lab, and graduation charges |
| Books and equipment | Textbooks, digital access, scrubs, shoes, and any required clinical equipment |
| Clinical clearance | Background checks, screening, health documentation, and CPR or BLS requirements |
| Certification | Which exam is included, voucher conditions, preparation materials, and retake charges |
| Attendance costs | Travel, parking, childcare, computer access, and unpaid time away from work |
| Payment arrangements | Deposit, installment count, total repayment, interest, fees, and refund terms |
For a concrete example of why this matters, Pasadena’s published tuition calculation is $1,840, while its overall estimate is approximately $4,000. Berkeley separately estimates about $689 for certain medical assistant expenses such as shoes, screening, and health requirements, in addition to semester fees. Neither tuition headline is the complete comparison.
What does medical assistant certification cost?
The certification exam is a separate product from a training program, even when a school bundles it into tuition.
NHA’s CCMA exam application currently costs $169 for an individual purchase. If your tuition includes a voucher, check how it is issued, when it expires, and whether it covers one attempt. Avoid adding the same included exam fee to your budget twice.
For CMA (AAMA), the AAMA eligibility page lists $125 for eligible completing students and recent graduates of CAAHEP- or ABHES-accredited programs. Other eligible applicants generally pay $125 as AAMA members or $250 as nonmembers. Your category determines the fee.
Continuing certification has its own budget. NHA currently lists $195 every two years for a single certification, with 10 continuing education credits required. Treat CCMA renewal as a future professional expense, separate from the initial training cost.
How to calculate your total cost
Use this calculation for each school:
School charges + required outside expenses + added attendance costs − confirmed grants and scholarships = estimated cost before financing charges.
Then add any interest and financing fees to understand the total cost of borrowing. A loan changes when you pay; it does not reduce the program’s price.
Here is an illustrative budget for a fictional program. These amounts are examples, not a quote from Springboard or another school.
| Item | Example amount |
|---|---|
| Tuition and mandatory school fees | $4,000 |
| Books and supplies | $300 |
| Clinical clearance and required training | $200 |
| Exam fee, if not already included | $169 |
| Additional travel and childcare | $600 |
| Subtotal | $5,269 |
| Confirmed scholarship | −$500 |
| Estimated cost before financing | $4,769 |
If the $169 exam were already included in the $4,000 tuition figure, the estimate would fall to $4,600. Small details in the enrollment agreement can change your budget.
Time away from paid work needs a separate line if it affects you. For example, missing eight paid hours a week for ten weeks means 80 hours of forgone work. Multiply those hours by your own pay rate. The result depends on your circumstances, so a generic national estimate would be less useful.
Compare program requirements as well as the price
When comparing medical assistant programs, ask whether each school includes an externship or other clinical experience and whether participation is required for graduation or optional. NHA does not require externships or clinicals for CCMA exam eligibility, but individual schools may include them in their program requirements.
If you plan to complete a placement, find out whether the school arranges a site, helps you search, or expects you to secure one. Ask about the location, schedule, and any required hours. Factor potential transportation costs, additional childcare, or reduced work hours into your budget.
For online programs, confirm whether enrollment includes any in-person activities and which, if any, are mandatory. If an externship is part of your plan, Springboard’s medical assistant externship guide can help you prepare questions about placement, site requirements, and scheduling.
Before paying, also confirm the specific certification the course prepares you for and the organization that awards it. A school’s certificate of completion is different from a professional certification. Check the certification issuer’s eligibility requirements directly so you understand how the program fits your intended path and whether you need to meet any additional requirements.
Financial aid and payment plans
Ask the financial aid office or enrollment team which options apply to the exact program you are considering. Availability can differ between programs at the same institution.
Separate the options in your comparison. Grants, scholarships, or employer assistance may reduce what you pay when their conditions are met. An installment plan spreads payments across dates. A loan adds repayment obligations that may include interest and fees.
For each offer, record the amount due before classes start, payment dates, total repayment, and what happens if you withdraw. If employer assistance is involved, check any completion or continued-employment conditions. Do not count unawarded aid as a discount in your working budget.
Is a medical assistant program worth the cost?
Start with your local employment options and the training you need to qualify for them. National wages provide context, but they do not predict your first offer or establish how quickly you will recover the cost of school.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a $45,690 median annual wage for medical assistants in May 2025. That figure covers workers across experience levels. Compare entry-level postings in your area, their required credentials, and the hours and benefits attached to the role. For regional context, see Springboard’s California medical assistant salary guide.
Then consider whether you can complete the program as scheduled. A lower price is useful only if the course format, support, clinical arrangements, and certification pathway fit your needs.
What Springboard includes
Springboard’s Certified Medical Assistant Program includes CCMA exam preparation and one exam voucher. It also describes instructor access, program support, career coaching, and assistance with finding an externship.
The public enrollment page lists both the standard course price and the current promotional pay-in-full option. Request a complete quote for your cohort and payment method, including any expenses outside tuition. Use that quote in your comparison rather than assuming an advertised promotion will remain available.
Springboard’s Certified Medical Assistant Program offers a 4 month online curriculum with CCMA exam preparation, externship support, and career coaching. Review the curriculum and ask the enrollment team to explain the coursework, certification, and placement schedule for your cohort.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between program cost and certification cost?
Program cost pays for education and the services included in the enrollment agreement. Certification cost pays for the credentialing process, usually including an exam application. A school may bundle the first exam attempt into tuition.
Are online medical assistant programs cheaper?
They can reduce travel expenses, but their tuition and included services vary. Compare the complete budget and clinical schedule with the alternatives available to you.
Can financial aid cover a medical assistant program?
It depends on the student, program, school, and funding source. Ask about eligibility and award timing before relying on aid to cover a deposit or other charge due before classes begin.
What costs are easiest to miss?
Clinical clearance (if required), books, equipment, travel to an externship, exam retakes, and time away from paid work can be easy to overlook. Ask which of these are required and already included.
