Jumpstart your career as a Business Analyst!

You'll learn to apply analytical tools and frameworks in the context of 5 real-life business case studies. This case-based method is inspired from top business schools.

WEEK 1:

Excel is a critical tool for anyone working on the business side of a company. You'll work through a set of Excel exercises from a real-world business case.

Learn about the range of features that Excel has to offer to help you solve business cases.

Topics covered:

  • Data-entry, formulas and formatting
  • Charts and basic visualization
  • Linking tables and spreadsheets with Lookups

WEEK 2-3:

Learn to build systematic models to forecast business performance, showcasing all your assumptions and testing scenarios

A restaurant chain's revenue has declined, and management is considering changing the menu. Could this strategy revive growth? You will build a model to forecast sales for the next 4 years.

Topics covered:

  • Spreadsheet modeling in Excel
  • Pivot tables
  • Thinking about assumptions and sensitivity
  • Case study for forecasting sales

WEEK 4-5:

Systematically identify the root cause of a fault or problem in a business

Have you ever encountered a business problem that you have not yet been able to solve? Or if you did find a solution it was only temporary because you did not solve the cause of the problem but rather the surface of the problem. The purpose of root cause analysis is to strike at the root of a problem by finding and resolving its root causes.

A large global e-commerce company has just entered a new country, and is seeing product returns increase. What could be causing this? You will create hypotheses and systematically test them using data, to arrive at the root cause of the problem.

Topics covered:

  • Hypothesis-driven analysis
  • Excel (data wrangling, lookups, pivot tables)
  • The 5 whys framework
  • Data visualization, and which chart to use

WEEK 6-7:

Identify the most relevant groups among a business' customers

Customer segmentation is the practice of dividing a customer base into groups of individuals that are similar in specific ways relevant to marketing, such as age, gender, interests and spending habits. Here are some valuable things you can do with segmentation analysis:

  • Identify the most and least profitable customers
  • Better focus marketing efforts
  • Improve customer service
  • Build loyal relationships
  • Price products differently
  • Create personas
  • Customize features

Topics covered:

  • Tableau (data import, wrangling, exploration)
  • Understanding how to use segmentation for analysis

WEEK 8-9:

Understand customer behavior at different steps of a flow, and how to optimize the flow to increase conversions and sales

A funnel analysis measures the ‘effectiveness’ of your platform by enabling you to measure the fraction of users who drop out at each stage of the funnel: any drop off is taken to be a fault of the platform that needs to be rectified.

Topics covered:

  • Different cases of funnel analysis e.g. clickstream, campaign optimization
  • Intro to SQL
  • Intermediate SQL: Aggregates and Joins

WEEK 10-11:

For most businesses, it costs more to acquire a new customer than to retain an existing one. Learn to predict how many and which customers will stay, what each customer is worth, and use this information to improve a business.

A telecom startup is about to raise venture capital, and the CEO needs your help for his presentation. How should the company think about customer lifetime value, given limited data? Which marketing channels are most profitable?

Topics covered

  • Concepts such as LTV, churn rate
  • Cohort analysis
  • Modeling CLV in Excel
